Through the years, Hope Chapel has scheduled times for extended worship as a community, wanting to devote more time than that which is allotted in our weekly gatherings.\u00a0 We offer these tips in anticipation as many of our community have not been in this setting. The tips are in light of Hope Chapel worship experience.\u00a0 We are not saying this is the only way, it is merely how we have grown at Hope Chapel.<\/p>\n

Worship night, Friday Nov. 18, 2011.<\/strong>\u00a0 For a few weeks, we \u00a0have had the sense that we should set\u00a0 some \u00a0extended time aside and pour ourselves out in worship before God.\u00a0 The discovery that others are hungry for this time with God has brought us to meet for this purpose \u2026 to pour out, to lavish our Creator with a great time of thanksgiving and worship.\u00a0 We dedicate 3 hours for this on Friday night.\u00a0 That seems like a long time, perhaps, but, it\u2019s perspective.\u00a0 As I prepare my heart, I am definitely thinking \u2026 \u201cHow awesome to have 3 hours for God .. with the saints \u2026 it\u2019s a small thing, as the song goes.\u201d<\/p>\n

It occurs to me, though, that it might be daunting to some who have never spent this much time in worship, so, we offer a few tips:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Forget the time limit<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you think you have to fill up 3 hours, it\u2019s a drag.\u00a0 This is invitation and opportunity to spend extended time with Him. Let the evening breathe.\u00a0 Come when you can and leave when you are ready; no one says you have to put in 3 hours.\u00a0 Or maybe leave for a bit: walk around outside in the beauty of the evening. God\u2019s creation is awesome.\u00a0 Worship under the stars, or under the clouds, the open Face of God beckons. \u00a0We are facilitators for the evening, not timekeepers.\u00a0 I love Marva Dawn\u2019s statement about worship \u201cA Royal Waste of Time.\u201d\u00a0 For us, it is extravagant use of our time, the sacrifice of praise.<\/li>\n
  2. There will be ebb and flow during the evening<\/strong>.\u00a0 Take time to enjoy and participate in each wave, we will not be in a hurry.\u00a0 Times of intense worship, times of silence, perhaps times of prayer or prophetic words, or partaking of the communion elements.\u00a0 There will be stations for this and other things to happen in the corners of the auditorium.<\/li>\n
  3. This is not a formal service<\/strong>, so we aren\u2019t concerned with certain protocol and locations.\u00a0 Posture before God is important: stand, sit, kneel, bow, prostrate, all are appropriate. I like to stand , often with my shoes off, so I can honor God with attention and focus.\u00a0 However, you see me in other positions, like prostrate on the floor.\u00a0 But, I like to pace about, also.\u00a0 I urge you, don\u2019t be confined to the pews.\u00a0 Walk around, dance around. \u00a0Go and stand by some of the lovely art on our walls and incorporate that in your worship time.\u00a0 Dance like no one is looking :0.\u00a0 Movement keeps our feet awake and our minds alert.\u00a0 I\u2019ll let you in on a little secret, the best place to worship is right up at the front, close to or on the stage.\u00a0 Come on up and join us at any time.\u00a0 It\u2019s a wonderful place to be!<\/li>\n
  4. There will be stations<\/strong> for partaking of communion, for receiving prayer, and perhaps other ministry areas.\u00a0 Feel free to go to one of these areas to partake or receive.<\/li>\n
  5. A significant part of the evening will focus on Psalm 96<\/strong>, a lovely Psalm, exhorting all creation to Praise God!\u00a0 Read it and meditate upon it before we gather.\u00a0 Let it be a springboard for what we do in the evening.\u00a0 Sing some of it back to Him.\u00a0 It starts with \u201cSing to the Lord a new song\u201d.\u00a0 How about making up your own songs during the evening from the text.\u00a0 I plan on doing that.<\/li>\n
  6. Anticipate meeting with God<\/strong>.\u00a0 I can\u2019t emphasize this enough.\u00a0 I expect to hear from God.\u00a0 There will be times of silence, or maybe quieter music, to facilitate this. Bring a bible, a pad to write on (or an iPad if you like).\u00a0 Bring art and setup somewhere to do that. Bring knitting if you want.\u00a0 How do you listen to God and how are you best postured when this happens?\u00a0 There is enough space to make this happen.\u00a0 Again, we encourage you to move within the worship space as the evening flows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
